Zines (pronounced "zeens" as in "magazines") are usually small publications produced by one or more creators, who have total creative control over their content. Zines have historically provided artists and writers a venue for free speech not available on more mainstream platforms. Zines were especially important in the decades right before the internet, after which blogs and other online platforms somewhat filled the niche zines offered in the 70's through the 90's, however I've noticed zines having a comeback in the last several years.
